Ystad & Österlen – Southeastern Skåne Unforgettable experiences all year round Southeastern Skåne is a small holiday paradise. From Haväng in the north to Ystad in the south the coastline is more than 800 kilometres long. Glittering ocean and golden sand dunes as far as the eye can see. Here you can find hiking trails that are attractive all year round: Through blossoming apple orchards in springtime, along fields of yellow rape during the summer or in a landscape of changing colours in autumn. The hiking trail Österlenleden, for example, takes you from the coast to the interior of Skåne with its unique flora and fauna as well as its quiet lakes with good possibilities for fishing. The national bicycle route Sydostleden passes several of the area’s cultural heritage sites, beautiful nature reserves and Sweden’s southernmost national park, Stenshuvud. With all due respect to nature, though, accommodation and food is also important! There is a choice broad enough to suit all tastes and budgets. From oceanfront camping with sand between your toes to exclusive hotels with award-winning spas. Every little Bed & Breakfast is unique and reflects the owner’s passion for the area. On the culinary front, there are fine dining, Michelin-starred restaurants and Toscana-style pizzerias with rustic wooden tables and fairy lights at night. As well as raw food cafés for the conscious eater. Ecological and locally produced have long been words of honour and guided food tours are being arranged for those who want to get really close to the producers. The picturesque towns offer small-scale shopping. There are no shopping centres but charming and specialized boutiques. You will find both a variety of exclusive Stetson hats, Portuguese tiles or Moroccan garden tables and articles that have been manufactured by local silversmiths, glassblowers or ceramists – just to mention a few. Southeast Skåne offers year-round activities. From relaxing trolley and canoe tours during the summer to yoga classes and retreats during autumn and winter. From exciting jeep rallies and wakeboard surfing in summertime to New Year dips and raft sauna during the winter. Golf can be played practically the whole year round. Especially delicious food experiences are the Asparagus Days, the Matrundan Food Tour and Skånes Food Festival in May as well as Kivik’s Apple Market and the harvest festivals in September. Go time-travelling and visit cultural heritage sites like Ales Stenar, the medieval castle Glimmingehus, rock carvings from the Bronze Age, Christinehofs castle, the abbey in Ystad and the museum farm Kulturens Östarp. During the Art Tour at Easter, for example, local artists open their studios for visitors, in June there is the Opera Festival at Drakamöllans Gårdshotell and in July it is time for the Jazz Festival in Brantevik, Österlen’s Garden Tour and famous artists at Sövde Amphitheatre, Backafestivalen with music from the whole world, breakfast meetings with inspiring lecturers in Simrishamn and Sillens dag, the Herring’s Day. World-class jazz artists are performing at Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival in August and at All Saints’ Day, the annual light festival Österlen Lyser is celebrated with illuminations so intense that they can probably be seen from airplanes passing by. A wonderful and meditative new tradition that keeps growing every year. We may not forget the active film industry. The popular films about detective Kurt Wallander have put Ystad on the map and you can visit film locations in Ystad and its surroundings on guided Wallander-tours. The town’s film museum Cineteket, situated next to Ystad Studios, gives an insight into the world of films and in the summertime it is definitely possible to end up close to a famous actor “in action”. But first and last we have the fantastic landscape, the gently rolling hills, the swelling sea and the glistening light which are unique to Southeastern Skåne!
